A facelift restores a younger appearance and creates a well-defined neck, lower face and jawline. The procedure has become common for both women and men. It is sually performed in the age between 40-65 but can also be done at a higher age with great result.
Operation
A facelift is done under general anaesthetic, which means you will be completely asleep and free from pain during the operation. The incisions are tailored for each patient needs, depending on which techniques is performed, how much skin is needing to be removed and how much the muscles needs to be elevated.
With a traditional facelift, the facial muscles are lifted and the excess skin is removed. The incisions are usually hidden in the hairline and around the contours of the ear. At Victoriakliniken we mostly perform “S-lift” also called “short scar facelift” as it gives a shorter scar. This technique leaves a very discrete scar, almost impossible to see. You can most likely leave the hospital the day after
After Operation
Most patient will experience bruising, swelling and tenderness around the eyes and down towards the neck. Bruising and swelling will at their worst after 2-3 days, then gradually subside. Sutures in the facial area are removed after 5-6 days and in the hairline after 2 weeks. Already at that stage you will see facial improvements.
Complications facelift
Complications
As with all type of surgery they all come with risks of complications.
- Patient who smokes, has diabetes or arteriosclerosis have a higher risk of delayed wound healing which can lead to poorly healed scars due to compromised blood microcirculation. Scars might need to be revised once healing is complete.
- A more uncommon risk is for the nerves controlling the muscles to be effected, it is usually due to swelling and only temporary and can take about 3-6 months for the nerves to recover.
- The sensory nerve to ear is located in the surgery area. The nerve is quite big and easy to avoid. If there would be any damages to sensory nerve, the surgeon would repair it immediately but it could lead to a temporary numbness in the earlobe.
- Numbness and sensation loss around the incision is common directly after surgery. Mostly are temporary but in rare cases can become permanent.
- Excessive scaring is an uncommon risk. The scar is usually hard to detect after 6 months. The incisions are placed discreetly in the hairline and natural skin folds making them hard to see. In rare cases the scar can become wider, usually due to tension in the skin, poor skin elasticity and impaired healing ability.
- Some patient can have temporary hair loss at the incision. The hair normally grows back within 6 months.
